The first 27 years of Jim's career in the Financial Services industry was spent in retail banking with the Bank of Scotland where he rose through the ranks to manager level and managed two branches of his own before deciding to move the Bank’s Corporate Trustee Section in 1989. During his nine years in that section, he held several positions before specialising in Regulatory Compliance and was Compliance Manager when the Section was sold to State Street Corporation, an American institutional bank in 1998.
State Street Trustees Ltd. was incorporated to handle the State Street trustee business and Jim was a director on the Board, holding the title Director of Compliance where responsibilities included regulatory compliance and risk. After eight years with State Street Trustees Ltd., he accepted the role of Director of Compliance, UK, Middle East and Africa, in State Street Global Services with compliance responsibility for offices in London, Edinburgh, Doha and Cape Town.
While the role was compliance focussed it also included strong elements of governance and risk and Jim sat on various committees including the Senior Management Committee (equivalent of a board), where guidance was given to the Global Services executive and senior management.
Jim took retirement in 2012 but is as busy as ever. He has taken on a few volunteer roles including (we are glad to say) the Director/Trustee role with Bright Light. Jim stepped down as chair in March 2019.
